Draco Malfoy ran. He ran because Snape told him to. He ran because his fellow Death Eaters were after him. He ran because he had failed to do the Dark Lord’s bidding. He ran because he was a coward. He was running away.
And then he heard his name. Someone had called him. A familiar voice. It was the last voice he wanted to hear, especially in the middle of the Forbidden Forest when there were Death Eaters who were probably coming after him.
He dismissed it and continued running aimlessly. He heard his name again.
He stopped running.
For a moment, all he could hear was the rustling of dry leaves and snapping of twigs. The sound was getting nearer and nearer until it stopped a few meters behind him. He could hear the person panting heavily.
“Draco,” the person managed to whisper in between breaths.
His greatest fear at the moment was realized.
He took a deep breath and turned around. Hermione Granger’s tear stained face greeted him and all he wanted to do was wipe her tears away and tell her that everything was going to be alright. That he knew what he was doing. But he didn’t so he couldn’t. And it pained him very much that he was the cause of her tears.
“Draco,” Hermione breathed again, fresh tears streaming down her face.
“What are you doing here?” His voice cracked.
“I’m coming with you.”
“No! Go back! Go back and help Potter!” He shouted at her. He wanted to be furious with her because he knew he doesn’t deserve this. He knew he doesn’t deserve this girl in front of him, this girl who ran after him, this girl who told him she loved him.
“I wasn’t asking for your permission. I said I’m coming with you!”
“For a smart girl, you’re pretty stupid. I’m a Death Eater, Granger! And I failed the Dark Lord! He’s coming after me! He’s going to kill me! He’s going to kill everyone around me!” He sobbed at the hopelessness of it all. It wasn’t after he had said the words that it sunk in. He was going to pay. And he promised himself he was the only one who was going to pay for it, not his parents, not Hermione Granger. “This was his plan…He knew I won’t be able to do it… And I proved him right… I couldn’t kill…” He sobbed uncontrollably.
Hermione ran towards him and wrapped her arms around his shaking body. He continued to sob until he had forgotten what he was crying about, but Hermione still held him. If it wasn’t for her, he would have fallen. She didn’t let go. She stroked his back up and down and whispered comforting words like, “This will all be over,” and “Everything’s going to be okay.”
“Why are you doing this?” He asked after what seemed like hours.
She looked directly into his grey eyes and smiled. It was the faintest smile but at that time, it was enough. “When are you going to get it into your head?”
She reached for his hand and laced her fingers with his. He felt warm inside. He felt like he can do anything. Maybe she was right. Maybe everything’s going to be okay. Maybe he didn’t have to be alone. Maybe he needed her.
“We’re in this together.”
